CLINICAL APPLICATIONS:
It exhibits both anti-inflammatory and antifibrotic effects. Much attention has been focused the antifibrotic effect of the drug. pirfenidone reduces fibroblast proliferation inhibits TGF- stimulated collagen production and reduces the production of fibrogenic mediators such as TGF.Pirfenidone has also been shown to reduce production of inflammatory mediators such as TNF and IL-1 in both cultured cells and isolated human peripheral blood mononuclear cells.
